From my first morning sunrise looking east on the north side of Kaua’i, the sun’s rays caught in the dark clouds and illuminated the dawn in yellow and fiery orange. The painting is 11×14; on Arches 140# cold pressed paper; painted with sponge and brush. $155
The awesome long sand beach on the west side of Kaua’i. 11×14 on Arches 140# cold pressed paper. Painted with brushes. $146
From the beach park at Lydgate on the east side of Wailua. The volcanic rock walls protect the beach and huge driftwood trees line the outer edge. 11×14 on Arches 140# cold pressed paper. $150
The tidal pools where everyone goes to snorkel. The big waves crash against the stones and the pools abound with fish. 11×14 on Arches 140# cold pressed paper. Painted with brush. $150
Looking west from a beach north of the park. It was a windy and bright day. 11×14 on Arches 140# cold pressed paper; painted with sponge and brush. $150
On a rainy, windy day when the rip tides were very strong. The red warning flags were posted, but still the surfers ventured out. The sailboats are all gone in the winter, so the bay is just a large pool of swells and eight-foot waves. Looking south toward the Kuhio Highway. 11×14 on Arches 140# cold pressed paper; painted with brushes. $150
Painted on the same day, this view is looking north toward the concrete pier that juts out into the bay at Hanalei Beach Park. This view captures more of the sunny but stormy sky, wind, clouds and the marine layer just above the horizon. Waves break at three places as the sea comes in around a reef into the bay. 11×14 on Arches 140# cold pressed paper; painted with brushes and sponge. $150
Sundown and the dive boat is picking up after a day on the sea. 11×14 Arches 140# cold pressed paper; brushes. $145
West of Hanalei along the Kuhio Highway is Tunnels Beach. At its western edge is a point made of coral. The surf is so shallow that it reflects the sky, and the light in amazing patterns. This is painted wet-on-wet (pools of water on the paper touched by the tip of the brush to allow the color to choose its own place). Small details were added by the touch of a small brush to complete the painting. 11×14 on Arches 140# cold pressed paper. $150
The sun was quickly setting behind me and the colors erupted with the fading light. I worked most on capturing the color of the field before me. Beyond it lay a dark green layer then the mountains that rose several hundred feet above me. Once I was home, I checked the satellite image of the area and noticed the dark green ribbon was a tree line following a stream through the field. It was about a hundred and fifty yards in front of the base of the mountain. A great instance of being fooled by the perspective of my eye. 11×14 on Arches 140# hot pressed (smooth) paper. $150
I returned to Tunnels another day when I was impressed with the sky and the colors reflected in the sea. The tide was up, and the image is altered from my earlier painting–I flattened the cliff to the left to change the focus of your eye to the marine layer above the horizon. This painting warms me just to look at it. 11×14 Arches 140# hot pressed (smooth) paper painted with sponge and brushes. $150
